Special team to probe Guelph fires

Guelph police have created a special team to investigate a series of fires in the city’s east end.
“Right now we’re investigating each fire as an individual incident, looking to see if there are any links that would lead us to believe they’re connected,” explains Sergeant Doug Pflug, after a third blaze in two weeks.
The latest fire broke out yesterday afternoon at a home on Trailbrook Lane, near Grange Road. It was limited to the garage and caused an estimated $5000 in damage.
That was not the case on Saturday, when an early morning blaze on Grange Road damaged two homes, causing an estimated loss of $700,000. And on July 20, an overnight fire destroyed a camper trailer parked in a driveway as well as the vinyl siding on the front of another home. Police say in that case the family was lucky to escape their home without injury.
“We’ve established that all of the fires have been suspicious in nature,” Pflug notes. “But we don’t have enough evidence to definitively say that they’re linked or connected in any way.”
The latest blaze, in broad daylight yesterday afternoon, came on the same day police issued a public appeal encouraging area residents to be vigilant.
