Layton taking Leave of Absence

Jack Layton has been diagnosed with a new cancer, and is taking a leave of absence as leader of the federal N-D-P.

Layton says his battle against prostate cancer is going very well.

But looking thin and speaking with a rasping voice, Layton has told a Toronto news conference that recent tests indicate he has a different cancer that will require further treatment.

He did not identify the type of cancer.

Layton says his leave of absence is temporary and he’s confident this cancer will also be beaten.
