2011 NHL Entry Draft

Some lucky hockey players are living the dream tonight.

The first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft has taken place in Minnesota and this is a running commentary on how it played out.

For the second year in a row, the Edmonton Oilers hold the first overall pick.  They have chosen Center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Red Deer Rebels (WHL).

Kitchener Rangers Captain and Forward Gabriel Landeskog has been picked by the Colorado Avalanche. He is the second pick overall.

The Florida Panthers have chosen Forward Jonathan Huberdeau of the Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL) with the third overall pick.

The New Jersey Devils have chosen Defenceman Adam Larsson of Skellefteå AIK in Elitserien, Sweeden with the fourth overall pick.

The New York Islanders have selected Forward Ryan Strome of the Niagara Ice Dogs with the fifth overall pick.

The Ottawa Senators have selected Forward Mika Zibanejad of the Djurgårdens IF, a team based in Stockholm, Sweeden with the sixth overall pick.

True North Entertainment chair Mark Chipman first officially announced the name of the Winnipeg franchise as the Jets and then Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff picked Kitchener native Mark Scheifele as the seventh overall.  Scheifele plays Centre for the Barrie Colts.

The Philadelphia Flyers have selected Forward Sean Couturier of the Drummondwille Voltigeurs (QMJHL) with the eighth overall pick.

The Boston Bruins have selected Defenceman Dougie Hamilton from the Niagara Ice Dogs with the ninth overall pick.

The Minnesota Wild have selected Defenceman Jonas Brodin tenth overall. Brodin plays for Färjestads BK, based out of Karlstad, Sweeden.

The Colorado Avalanche have selected Defenceman Duncan Siemens eleventh overall.  Siemens played for the Saskatoon Blades (WHL).

Defenceman Ryan Murphy of the Kitchener Rangers has been chosen 12th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Calgary Flames have selected Forward Sven Baertschi of the Portland Winterhawks (WHL) with the 13th pick overall

The Dallas Stars have selected Defenceman Jamie Oleksiak of the Northeastern Huskies (NCAA) 14th overall.

The New York Rangers have selected Forward J.T. Miller of the US National Development Team with the 15th overall pick.

The Buffalo Sabres have selected Forward Joel Armia of the Ässät in the Finnish Elite League with the 16th overall pick.

The Montreal Canadiens have selected Defenceman Nathan Beaulieu of the Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL) with the 17th overall pick.

The Chicago Blackhawks select Forward Mark McNeill of the Prince Albert Raiders (WHL) with the 18th overall pick.

The Edmonton Oilers have selected Defenceman Oscar Klefbom of the Färjestads BK, based out of Karlstad, Sweeden.  Klefbom is the 19th overall pick and the Oilers second pick in the first round.

The Phoenix Coyotes pick Defenceman Connor Murphy from the US National Development Team with the 20th overall selection.

The Ottawa Senators have selected Forward Stefan Noesen of the Plymouth Whalers with the 21st overall pick and the clubs second selection of the first round.

The Toronto Maple Leafs pick Forward Tyler Biggs from the US National Development Program with the 22nd overall selection.

The Pittsburgh Penguins select Defenceman Joe Morrow from the Portland Winterhawks (WHL) with the 23rd pick overall.

The Ottawa Senators select Forward Matt Puempel of the Peterborough Petes with the 24th overall pick and the clubs third selection of the first round.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have picked Defenceman Stuart Percy of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors with the 25th pick overall and the clubs second pick of the first round.

The Chicago Blackhawks have selected Forward Phillip Danault of the Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL) with the 26th overall pick and the clubs second selection of the first round.

The Tampa Bay Lightning select Forward Vladislav Namestnikov of the London Knights with the 27th overall selection.

The Minnesota Wild select Forward Zack Phillips from the Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL) with the 28th pick overall and the clubs second pick of the first round.

The Vancouver Canucks have picked Forward Nicklas Jensen of the Oshawa Generals with the 29th overall selection.

The Anaheim Ducks have selected Forward Rikard Rakell of the Plymouth Whalers with the 30th and final pick of the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
