Report: Catholic school enrolment down

A shift in Canadian immigration trends is believed to be a key factor in a drop off of students in Waterloo Region’s Catholic schools.
Thursday morning’s Record reports the local board is projecting 315 fewer students next year, while the public board expects an increase of almost 400.
That could also result in the Catholic board losing 23 special-ed professionals since provincial funding is based primarily on enrolment.
According to the board, new immigrants to Canada now are often of Asian decent or from Muslim countries, whereas in the past, many came from Catholic dominated countries.
