On strike

Kitchener is the latest city to be hit by rotating Postal Strikes.

CUPW workers walked off the job last night at 11pm, the 24-hour strike also hit Quebec City.

President of CUPW local 560 in Kitchener Waterloo, John Wastell says union members are fighting for the benefits and wages that they deserve.

Wastell says pickets are set up at at their main processing plant, Kitchener Mail processing plant on Trillium, and at their facilities in Waterloo, Elmira, Preston and Galt.

He believes these rotating strikes are very effective, and says it’s a strategy that has been used before that has a serious impact on the employer, with the least amount of impact on the members and the public.

He says the members are frustrated and don’t know what’s going on at the negotiating table and are upset with the stance Canada Post has taken.

The Post Office issued a news release saying the two sides remain far apart on several fundamental issues.

It says the Canadian Union of Postal Workers refuses to discuss ways to reduce costs and address declining mail volumes and increasing competition.
