Canada Post: rotating strikes

Canada Post workers are walking the picket lines, but only one city at a time.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says their next round of rotating strikes will begin in Hamilton at 11:45 p.m. EDT Friday night. The Hamilton portion of the strike is expected to last 48 hours.
About 150 Canada Post employees hit the bricks in Winnipeg late last night for the first in a series of rotating 24-hour strikes.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers announced plans to strike earlier yesterday after a last-ditch attempt by the Crown Corporation failed to head off job action.
CUP-W says Winnipeg was chosen as the first strike location because it was first city to feel the impact of Canada Post’s modernization program.
Winnipeg local vice president Lisa Peterson says the mood on the picket lines is very upbeat because they are the first to represent workers countrywide.
The union is hoping the strike will encourage management to return to the bargaining table with a proposal that meets the needs of its members.
CUP-W says it expects to meet senior post office management today.
Canada Post has said it needs to address labour costs.
Jon Hamilton, a spokesman for the Crown corporation says they want the union to respond to Canada Post’s latest offer.
The union is expected to issue a response at a news conference in Ottawa this morning.
Sick leave and wages are among the sticking issues in the labour dispute.
