Car Free Sundays

Council members for Kitchener and Waterloo have come together, and are proposing ‘car free Sundays.’
Waterloo City councillor Melissa Durrell is one of the members behind the plan. She says Waterloo council will vote on it on Monday, Kitchener city council votes on the 30th.
It would see King street between Waterloo public square down to the civic square in Kitchener closed off to vehicles. Instead, there would be activities in both squares and along the street, like artists, vendors and live music.
Durrell hopes the first event will be held June 19th, with ‘car free Sundays’ happening once a month to September.
She says it’s a great way to bring the community together, although recognizes concerns from local businesses, as well as accessibility to the hospital.
She says it wouldn’t cost a lot, maybe a couple thousand dollars to hire a few Police Officers and set up barricades.
Durrell says a number of cities have such festivals, such as London and Ottawa and it’s been very successful there.
