TORONTO – Ontario is now primarily Tory blue and N-D-P orange.
Liberal stalwarts such as Ken Dryden and Joe Volpe were beaten by Conservatives, who even took down Leader Michael Ignatieff.
Liberal Bob Rae won, but the N-D-P took five of the Grits’ seats in the Greater Toronto Area, including Parkdale-High Park from Gerard Kennedy.
The 9-0-5 area around Toronto also saw Liberals Paul Szabo, Mark Holland and Ruby Dhalla go down to defeat.
Conservative cabinet ministers Tony Clement, Jim Flaherty and Julian Fantino were re-elected, but Helena Guergis failed to hang on to her riding of Simcoe-Grey as an Independent.
The N-D-P hung on to many of its seats in northern Ontario, with the exception of Sault Ste. Marie, which turned to the Conservatives.
And of course, the new leader of the opposition — Jack Layton — handily held onto his Toronto seat.
