Digging in for one day

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region is preparing for another one-day food collecting blitz.
The second annual Dig In campaign is set for May 14th.
Small teams from different media outlets were invited to the Food Bank’s facilities on Alpine Drive today to compete in a friendly food-packing challenge. The idea was to raise awareness of the work done by volunteers to distribute food throughout the community.
On May 14th, the Food Bank will spread out to some 30 sites around the region to collect as many donations as possible.
“Through the summer months, people don’t often think of the Food Bank,” says Ruth Friendship-Keller, Manager of Community Partnerships with the Food Bank. “Hunger is in our community year round. The Food Bank needs to have a good reserve of food to make it through the summer months until Thanksgiving comes again.”
It takes between 45-50,000 pounds of food per week to service the more than 80 programs supported by the Food Bank of Waterloo Region and Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank.
Last year’s one day Dig In event raised 80,000 pounds of food.
