Cuts coming?

Kitchener City Councillors will put the final touches on the city’s 2011 budget today and they’ll decide on a list of potential cuts to help bring down the tax levy.
Staff were asked to come up with a list of possible reductions that could bring down the increase by 1-5%. Right now it sits at 5.67% or about $169 a year per household. Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr says he believes that number is too high.
Zehr tells 570 News, many of the proposed cuts can be made without any real effect on the public, but that’s not the case across the board. He says, “There are some though, that would be noticeable in terms of the level of service and particularly those that affect individual citizens and I think that those probably will find some difficulty in having to be cut.”
Zehr says the list of potential reductions ranged from community centres, to grass cutting, to staffing reductions.
Councillors will finalize the budget during an all day meeting today.
