Colonial Cookies workers to vote

There’s good news for workers at the former colonial cookies plant in Kitchener.

The United Food and Commercial Workers local 175 has met with the potential new owner, Weston Foods Canada.

Rob Nicholas, a union representative, says they have reached a tentative agreement and will be presenting it to their membership at 9:00 a.m. on Monday February 28th at the Holiday Inn on Fairview Road in Kitchener.

“Its a better scenario than the alternative which is that no one returns to work at all,” said Nicholas. “In this case there are options that will be offered to employees and they will be able to vote on the contract.”

Nicholas says the union did put forward several key conditions that needed to be addressed during the talks.

Earlier this week, Weston Foods received court approval to purchase the assets of the now bankrupt Colonial Cookies.
