Kitchener City Councillors have a weighty list of options on the table as they look for ways to reduce this year’s municipal tax increase.
City staff have released a list of potential cuts which could reduce the overall proposed tax levy increase by anywhere from one to 5-percent.
As it stands now, the proposed hike is just under 2-percent.
The list of proposals is long and includes everything from eliminating some summer playground programs and reducing sports field maintenance to delaying the opening of the Bridgeport Community Centre and turning the city hall fountain into just a reflecting pool while totally shutting down some other fountains.
There’s a also a proposal to shorten the season for outdoor pools.
Charitable organizations could also be hit with a proposed $150,000 cut in the stormwater management exemption.
Councillors will get a closer look at all of the proposals on February 28th, but no decisions will be made at that time.
