An Ottawa-based health advocacy group has released what it calls the world’s first sedentary behaviour guidelines.
The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology advises that children aged 5 to 17, limit all forms of sedentary recreational screen time to no more than two hours a day.
The Society’s Mark Tremblay tells 570 News, kids simply need to stand up or walk, even while using their electronic device, the reap health benefits.
Other recommendations include: walking or cycling to school, walking the dog and doing household chores. They even recommend that teens visit their friends instead of texting them, or communicating with them on-line.
These new guidelines are separate from a recommendation issued by the Society three weeks ago, advising that children and youth get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.
