Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson was in Kitchener today to speak about his government’s plans to crack down on child pornography.
Nicholson held a roundtable discussion with local community groups, including the Child Witness Centre, which serves the region and surrounding areas.
Executive director Jack Reynolds is calling on the government to invest in programs that will help prevent child sexual abuse.
He suggests professionals who work with kids should be able to identify when a child may be a victim.
Reynolds also suggests investing more money in finding better treatment for offenders and victims, so that they do not become sex offenders themselves when they grow up.
The Child Witness Centre is also applying for a portion of the 5.2 million dollar fund the government has set aside over the next five years for child advocacy groups.
Reynolds says they are moving into a new home on Duke Street, across from the new courthouse, and will need some financial assistance to be sustainable.
During his visit, Nicholson also said he hopes the bill to repeal the faint hope clause is one of the first bills Parliament passes when it resumes.
The clause gives convicted murderers the chance to apply for early parole.
