Officials with Waterloo Region’s Public Health Unit say they are pleasantly surprised by the funding the province has committed to help stamp out bed bugs.
The government announced today it will invest $5 million to support programs aimed at combating the problem.
Dave Young, the Region’s Manager of Health protection and Investigation, says the next step is for them to decide how much funding to apply for.
Young suggests the money will be used to get information out on how to identify and deal with bed bugs.
The little bloodsuckers aren’t as big a problem in Waterloo Region as they are in larger cities, but Young says they do get the odd complaint.
The critters are usually a problem in places where they can easily spread, like apartment buildings.
Young says there is also a misconception about where bed bugs can be found.
He says even the cleanest hotel or house can get them.
