Fire officials say hot ashes led to a blaze at a home on Windermere Court in the Highland-Ira Needles area of Kitchener overnight.
The ashes were stored in a garbage can in the garage of the home.
Kitchener Fire Department Prevention Officer, Tom Ruggle says ashes can smolder for days and the proper way to dispose of them is to transfer them to a metal can with a tight lid.
Luckily, in this case, Ruggle says the six people inside the home at the time of the fire, were not hurt.
The blaze broke out at 2:45-am.
There were working smoke alarms in the house but they did not sound because the fire damaged the electrical system.
A family member smelled smoke and immediately evacuated.
Ruggle says the blaze caused about $150,000 in damage.
