Soldier coming home

The body of the 154th soldier to die during Canada’s mission to Afghanistan is on his way home.

Canadian soldiers placed a casket carrying Corporal Steve Martin on a plane in Kandahar yesterday.

Martin was on foot patrol Saturday during his second tour of Afghanistan when he was killed by an explosive device.

It happened near a major road construction project that NATO is pushing in a volatile district of Kandahar province.

Martin had arrived earlier this year just after burying his grandfather in his hometown of Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover, about 115 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

A neighbour of Martin’s parents, Gaston Laterreur, says Martin always had a smile on his face when he walked by.

He says Martin was a brave man from a very nice family.

It is the first combat death suffered by the army since August.
