How much salt are you pouring out over your driveway?
Executive Director of Smart About Salt Council, Ken Tomihiro, tells 570 News that even though it’s the “go-to” winter staple, it’s not as effective as most home-owners think.
Many people replacing the salt with shovelling, Tomihiro says many don’t realize salt stops working at minus ten degrees and below.
He recommends using your shovel to break the ice, laying down sand, or purchasing more environmentally-friendly alternatives.
However, he warns the other options can take quite a toll on your wallet.
If you already have bags of salt at home, he suggests using sugar beet juice, which is an effective “green” additive that will help melt the ice.
