Are you shovel ready?

The snow and ice on our doorsteps may be frustrating to get rid of, but it’s good business for at least one local retailer.

Scott Philp, Store Manager at Kitchener Home Hardware on Victoria Street says sales of shovels and ice melters were up 10 to 15 per cent over the weekend.

But he says they haven’t seen enough of a traditional winter yet to fuel a rise in snowblower sales.

Philp says that usually comes in January, when people get tired of lifting and dumping snow by hand.

A few years ago, there was a shortage of snowblowers locally because of a blustery winter that dumped a lot of snow on Waterloo Region.

City crews are still trying to clear all of the streets covered in ice and snow from the weekend and officials say it could take a few more days to get the job done.

As they do that, by-law officers in Kitchener are trying to keep vehicles off the roads overnight.

About 100 tickets have been issued each night, since the city stopped allowing overnight parking on December 1st. The fine is 30 dollars.
