Murphy gets a shot at redemption

Kitchener Rangers defenceman Ryan Murphy did not make Team Canada’s Under-18 squad that won gold this past summer in Slovakia.
His shot at redemption comes this weekend as he departs Saturday for Team Canada’s selection camp for the World Junior Hockey Championships in Buffalo.
“I’m not gonna lie, when I first got let go from the U-18 team, I didn’t think it was a possibility (to be invited to the World Junior camp),” admits Murphy. “But as the season went on, I got more and more confident.”
That confidence paid off when Murphy became one of 39 invitees to Team Canada’s selection camp in Toronto. But that roster will have to be whittled down to 22 before departing for the tournament that opens December 26th in Buffalo.
“I definitely don’t want to be one of those cuts again,” Murphy says with a slight laugh. “I got invited for a reason so I just want to do there what I’ve been doing with the Rangers in the regular season and hopefully they like me.”
Murphy is one of 12 defencemen with hopes of making the final roster.
The Rangers are home to Owen Sound tonight.
