New hot spot downtown

Business is booming in the west end of downtown Kitchener. As more businesses move to Kitchener’s core, the service industry is looking to cash in on the captive audience.

The latest development in the downtown continues an already strong relationship. The owner of Elements, Bobby O’Brien’s and Dallas has opened McCabe’s Irish Pub at the corner of King and Francis, once the site of Sammy’s Garage.

“From 15 years ago until now, every effort is raising the bar,” Darryl Moore, vice-president of operations, says enthusiastically about the devotion of his business to the downtown. “I think we’re only scratching the surface of better things to come with the developments up at this end.”

Those west end developments include the Kaufman Lofts, the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy and The Tannery, which is still in development but is already home to The Communitech Hub, Desire 2 Learn and, soon, Google.

Vice-president of the downtown Kitchener Business Improvement Association, Moya Spruce, is equally enthusiastic about the west end’s prospects.

“When you open up streets like this and you light them up, it gives you that comfortable feeling,” Spruce says. “It’s a win-win for everybody. It really is.”

The new pub opens to the public at lunch today and will be open for business seven days a week.
