Waterloo residents have voted by a thin margin against continuing to fluoridate their water. The results came in with 13,363 votes against fluoridation and 13,216 for it.
The question about Amalgamation talks between Kitchener and Waterloo yielded different results in the cities. 23,116 Kitchener residents were for talks with Waterloo, while 12,458 were against. It was a different story in Waterloo where the majority, 17,478 were against the talks with only 9,262 in favour.
University of Waterloo Political Science Professor John English says despite the vote, the amalgamation question isn’t going away saying, “it has been here for 150 years and will be here in the future. It comes back every decade…it’s like Quebec separatism, every generation has to deal with it.”
Retired Political Science Professor Bob Williams says, “there will be some element of conversation that goes on around the number of shared services…it will stay below the surface but it won’t have the same kind of punch it would have had if this vote had carried in both cities.”
