Charges may be laid after turtle and tortoise ‘modified’

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC SPCA says charges could be recommended in the next few days after a turtle and a tortoise were found with holes drilled into their shells so handles could be attached.
One of the animals also had a jewel glued to its shell. Marcie Moriarty with the SPCA’s Cruelty Investigations Department says, “I was definitely disturbed, this is ridiculous.”
She finds it hard to believe someone could put handles on a turtle and tortoise to make them easier to carry around.
Moriarty says once the animals get back from the vet, investigators will decide whether to recommend animal cruelty charges. “Their opinion could come very quickly, and we’d be submitting that charge to Crown Counsel.”
She tells us after that happens, it could take up to six months for the Crown to actually lay charges.
