A group of experts say the federal government’s decision not to revise tobacco warnings is a mistake.
The current warnings have been in use for ten years and University of Waterloo professor Geoffrey Fong says they are stale.
Fong is a senior investigator with the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research.
He says their research shows that youth who may have an interest in smoking and those who already smoke are not getting any new messages and that’s having a detrimental effect.
The refreshed warnings were expected to include a toll-free number for help to quit smoking.
But the government recently said that instead of ordering tobacco companies to make the change, it would focus instead on curbing contraband cigarettes.
