MOE: Human error

The Ministry of the Environment says human error appears to be the cause of a compound being released into the air by Chemtura on Monday.

Greta Najcler says the chemical plant in Elmira is also making arrangements with auto body shops to clean up or repair any damage caused to cars by the tar-like substance.

For houses that may have been affected, Najcler says Chemtura is working with a consultant to line up service providers and the company would be billed for the cleaning.

Chemtura issued a release on Wednesday afternoon where they mentioned the fact that they are working with all parties involved to “ensure that the clean up of affected vehicles,
homes and other property is done in a manner that is satisfactory to the owner and that is of
minimal inconvenience.”

There was also a “hot-line” number given for those affected to call.

“In order to facilitate this process (we) ask that you call the hotline number (519-669-1671 ext. 313) to leave your name, address, phone number and licence plate number of the vehicle(s) that require cleaning.”

The results of MOE testing of the grass and other vegetation in the area yesterday will not be known until next Wednesday.

There’s also no word yet on whether a fine will be issued against Chemtura for the error that caused the compound’s release.
