Ashley Smith Records Released

Correctional Service of Canada has handed over the documents on 19-year old Ashley Smith’s suicide to an inmate right’s organization.

The Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies will review the circumstances that lead to her suicide at the Grand Valley Institution in October 2007.

Kim Pate of Elizabeth Fry says she wants to know more about decisions concerning Smith’s transfers, as well as her alleged treatments and segregation.

Smith was 19 when she choked herself to death with a strip of cloth.

She had accused the Correctional Service of poor treatment, including assault, a lack of psychiatric care and frequent transfers between prisons and treatment facilities across Canada.
