One of the first opposition candidates for the next provincial election has been nominated and he’ll be running in Waterloo Region. Michael Harris will compete against Liberal MPP Leeanna Pendergast in Kitchener-Conestoga, setting up a repeat of the 2007 race in that riding. Harris was acclaimed at a nomination meeting last night and becomes one of the first candidates named in a non-member held riding in the province.
“I’m very excited at the honour of being nominated,” Harris said in an interview with 570 News.
Harris ran for municipal council in Kitchener in 2006 before losing to Pendergast in the 2007 provincial election.
“It’s a ton of work and you need to be 100% committed to doing it and, obviously, I’m committed to doing it again,” Harris says. “We have such a great community here and I can’t wait to get back out there.”
Harris believes the issues “at the door” are similar no matter what level of political office one is pursuing. He expects to hear calls for a representative that will work hard for his or her constituents and someone who will follow through on their promises.
Harris says he’s entering the race again because he thinks people need better representation.
“We believe that the next election will be about how life has become unaffordable for average families and that we really will need some relief here.”
The provincial vote is slated for October 6, 2011.
