The West Nile Virus has turned up in Waterloo Region.
The public health department confirms the virus has been found in three mosquito pools in the region.
It’s the first time this year West Nile has been found in Waterloo Region, although it has turned up in other parts of the province.
The region’s Manager of Health Protection and Investigation, Brenda Miller says the finding comes as no surprise, considering “we have had positive pools in the Region in previous years.”
So far, there have been no local human cases of West Nile, but health officials are urging residents to do what you can to avoid mosquito bites.
Those measures include wearing long sleeved shirts and pants, minimizing time outdoors during dusk and dawn and applying a repellent containing DEET whenever you are outdoors.
