Labour Day has passed and this latest edition was a stress-free one for some 100,000 unionized construction workers in Ontario.
They are members of 25 trade unions in the institutional, commercial and industrial construction industry and they all managed to reach contract agreements with their employers this year without any strikes or work disruptions.
Sean Strickland, CEO of the Ontario Construction Secretariat, tells 570 News this has happened before, but it’s rare.
He says there are a few reasons for the widespread labour peace in such a huge and diverse industry.
He says the mood at the bargaining table has been less confrontational, in part, because his organization – the Secretariat – has made that a goal.
Also, he says the still-recovering economy is top of mind for unions and employers and having a strike at this juncture would not be wise.
