Officials discover insects that kill trees

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has discovered an insect that kills ash trees in Waterloo region.

The CFIA has found Emerald Ash Borer on two properties in the area of Homer Watson Boulevard and Fountain Street near the 401.

The city of Kitchener says affected property owners have been contacted.

EAB is a highly destructive insect that attacks and kills all species of ash trees.

The insect is native to eastern Asia and was first discovered in Windsor and Detroit in 2002.

Several local municipalities are working together to try to help slow the spread of the pest.

Residents and visitors are being asked not to transfer firewood into or out of the region and not to move ash trees in the form of logs or lumber.

If an ash tree on your property looks like it could be infected, officials ask that you call the CFIA.

For more information, visit the region’s EAB website.
