OTTAWA – Saudi Arabia is expected to go ahead with a ban on BlackBerry services today because of the encryption technology in the device. But, so far RIM has said it will not compromise on security.
Several governments including the United Arab Emirates, want greater access to Research in Motion’s encryption code, citing national security issues.
The Canadian and U-S governments have stepped into the growing dispute saying they’re concerned that such bans could effect trade and diplomacy.
International Trade Minister Peter Van Loan says he’s hoping a compromise will be reached between the U-A-E and Waterloo, Ont., based RIM.
The U-A-W plans to suspend the service’s email, messaging and data function in October because data is automatically transmitted out of the country and to a Canadian relay station before making its way back into the U-A-E.
India and Indonesia have also raised security concerns.
So far, RIM has said it won’t compromise on security and make changes to suit a particular government.
