Rig worker testifies

A Deepwater Horizon oil rig worker has testified that the rig’s fire alarm system was partially disabled before the explosion that led to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Fox News is reporting chief electronics technician Michael Williams told a federal panel that the alarm system was set at “inhibited mode” to avoid false alarms that would wake the sleeping crew. He says they’d been set like that for over a year.

Williams also said their were constant problems with the computer systems used to monitor the rig, adding that his concerns were ignored by supervisors.

The April 20th explosion led to the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.
