People may not know who he is or how to pronounce his name – but it was another big moment in sports for South Africa yesterday at the British Open.
Louis Oosthuizen (which by the way is pronounced LOO’-ee WUHST’-hy-zen) won the British Open by dominating the field over the final 48 holes at Scotland’s St. Andrews golf course.
The 27-year-old South African finished 16-shots under par, seven in front of Lee Westwood for his first major championship.
The victory comes one week after South Africa concluded a wildly popular World Cup, and on the day Nelson Mandela celebrated his 92nd birthday.
Oosthuizen took the lead for good during Friday’s second round, despite making the cut only once in his previous eight appearances in major tournaments.
