Local Girl Guides are being given an out-of-this-world experience today, as ten Girl Guides attending the Guiding Mosaic 2010 Camp at the Guelph Lake Conservation Area will get the chance to chat with astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
The opportunity is made possible through the Amateur Radio in the International Space Station (ARISS) program.
The select girls will have ten minutes to ask on-orbit astronauts about their lives in outer space.
Girl Guides of Canada Marketing Co-ordinator Christine Harris tells 570 News anticipation for the event has been building steadily. “The girls are very excited. This is one of the highly anticipated events of camp and a lot of the girls are really looking forward to it, especially the girls who are going to be speaking with the astronauts.”
A video of the earth will be projected for the girls to follow the ISS as it nears Guelph. The Guides have also been studying orbital mechanics and learning about the value of successful international partnerships in preparation for the event.
“This is a program (ARISS) that already exists so that they can educate the girls about space and the International Space Station and get them interested in, perhaps, career opportunities in the area,” says Harris.
Harris adds the live chat is part of the 10-day international camp celebrating the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides Canada. “With traditional activities and out-of-this-world activities and I think (contacting with space) falls right into that ‘out-of-this-world’ bit,” she laughs.
“We thought it would be an exciting thing for the girls.”
