Math Olympians preparing at WLU

Six of Canada’s sharpest young math minds are ready to divide, add, subtract, multiply and conquer at a global contest.
They are taking part in a prestigious math competition for high schoolers.
The six male students from Grades 7 through 12 are representing Canada at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Kazakhstan, and have been training at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo.
Canada is among more than 100 countries at this year’s event.
During the competition today and tomorrow, the students will be given three problems and four-and-a-half hours to complete them.
Subjects covered are limited to what’s in a high school curriculum, including algebra, geometry and number theory.
This year’s Canadian team includes two students from B-C, one from Alberta and three from Ontario.
The International Mathematical Olympiad, which began in 1959 in Romania, runs until July 14th.
Since Canada began taking part in 1981, our match whizzes have racked up 17 gold, 40 silver and 68 bronze medals.
