Call it a fertilizer false alarm.
Toronto police have found a man who bought a load of potential bomb-making fertilizer in southern Ontario — and they’ve taken him off their suspicious list.
Alarms sounded after a man bought a large quantity of ammonium nitrate on May 26th in Lincoln, about an hours drive from Toronto and the upcoming G-20 summit.
Police had said the buyer misrepresented himself as making the purchase on behalf of a local grower. A composite sketch of the man was issued Wednesday afternoon and just hours later he contacted the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team.
Police say they recovered the ammonium nitrate at two addresses in Toronto — and stress there was nothing suspicious about the purchase, and they don’t expect to lay charges.
Ammonium nitrate is widely used in agriculture, but it has also become a favourite bomb making ingredient for terrorists because it’s cheap, plentiful and extremely powerful.
