Oil spill larger than first thought

U-S President Barack Obama says the government is in charge of the response to the Gulf oil spill, not the oil company B-P.

He responded to criticism today that Washington isn’t taking an active enough role in getting the leaking well plugged.

Obama says his administration will do whatever is needed to protect and restore the Gulf Coast from this “unprecedented disaster.”

U-S government estimates today show the spill is far larger than thought, and the largest in American history.

The U-S Geological Survey says the spill is likely between 64 million and 148 million litres.

Obama has also announced a six month moratorium on new deepwater oil wells.

Meantime, the head of the troubled agency that oversees offshore drilling has resigned.
