After 15 years of hockey broadcasting on 570 News, Gary Doyle has announced his retirement. He will continue with his daily talk show from 12-3 but in order to spend more time with his family, Doyle is stepping down from his role as colour commentator on Kitchener Rangers broadcasts.
Broadcast partner Don Cameron says the pairing with Doyle was a perfect fit from Day One. Cameron says Doyle was a true professional in every sense of the word and it wasn’t long before the two of them were finishing one another’s thoughts and sentences. Cameron reflects on road trips when the duo would spend time shopping for CD’s, always in friendly competition to see who could buy more. Cameron also remembers Doyle as a master storyteller with a lengthy hockey history from which to draw those anecdotes. He says he will miss his longtime broadcast partner but is confident Gary will still make it to the rink on more than one occasion.
Doyle’s broadcasting career actually spans more than 30 years and includes hockey broadcasting work in Saskatchewan where he was the play-by-play voice of the Estevan Bruins. He is stepping away from his work on the hockey broadcasts only and will continue with his other duties at the radio station. Don Cameron will continue his role on the Rangers broadcasts.
