The Kitchener Rangers are on the brink of pulling off a huge hockey upset. The Rangers have the defending Memorial Cup champion Windsor Spitfires in a 3-0 hole heading into tonight’s Game 4 at The Aud. Only two teams in OHL history have come back from 3-0 deficits to win a series — the 1988 Ottawa 67’s (who came back to beat Oshawa in the first round) and the 2005 Windsor Spitfires (who came back to beat the Soo in the first round).
The Rangers registered their first playoff sweep in the 1973-74 season, knocking off the Sudbury Wolves 8 points to 0 in the quarter-finals. The Rangers would do the same to the Toronto Marlboros (6-0 in points) in the first round of the 1978-79 playoffs and in 1981-82 Kitchener would sweep the Windsor Spitfires (8-0 in the quarter-finals) en route to their first Memorial Cup championship.
If the Rangers can get one win in the next four games versus Windsor, it will propel them into the OHL championship. Ironically, it was in the 2008 OHL championship when Kitchener almost become the third team in OHL history to cough up a 3-0 series lead. The Rangers led the Belleville Bulls 3-0 in the final only to see the Bulls climb back to tie the series and force a seventh game. However, the Rangers would prevail.
