Millions for local agencies

The United Way of Kitchener-Waterloo has announced it will invest more than three million dollars in local social service agencies.
CEO Jan Varner says the money comes at a time when those organizations are facing tighter budgets and a growing demand for their services.
The region says the demand for social assistance increased by 36 per cent between September of 2008 and January of this year.
Varner says that demand is not being met by local fundraising efforts.
The United Way recently announced its fundraising targets were off the desired pace.
It’s hoping to raise 21 million dollars over three years.
