Drinking and parking results in ticket for Kitchener driver

Good intentions weren’t good enough to get a driver off the hook for parking in a city owned lot in Waterloo.
Jim Strauss was ticketed over a year ago for leaving his vehicle parked in the downtown after a night out with friends.
He tells today’s Record he thought he was doing the right thing by not drinking and driving, but when he went to pick up his vehicle the next day he found a $30.00 ticket on his windshield.
The 58-year-old Kitchener man was found guilty, but the fine was waived in light of his explanation.
In Waterloo, overnight parking is banned in most city parking lots and on city streets, but a flat fee of $5 allows you to park at the Uptown Parkade at King Street and Willis Way. In Kitchener, overnight parking is allowed year-round in city-owned lots until 8:00 a.m. except during snow events. Parking on city streets is banned in the winter (Dec. 1 to March 31).
In Cambridge, overnight parking is permitted year-round in city lots, although that could change under a proposal now being considered.
