Kitchener Celebrates World Water Day

World Water Day will be marked in Kitchener tomorrow with an event at City Hall.
“Soupfest” will be celebrated in the rotunda, starting at 11:30. All proceeds will support the Children’s Water Education Council (CWEC).
CWEC President Pete Gray says it’s critical to get the message to kids in the hope that it will stay with them. Gray tells 570 News they’ve reached more than half a million kids with annual groundwater festivals that date back to 1994, adding that many of those kids have chosen to pursue science in their future studies.
Gray says this is an important piece because he believes education is power and once someone has knowledge it’s something they can use down the road.
Tomorrow’s “Soupfest” is a means of fundraising so CWEC can continue with various educational initiatives. Gray also insists that we need to remain vigilant when it comes to conservation because water is not in limitless supply.
The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.
The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water by adopting a resolution. Themes for the day have changed annually from trans-boundary waters to sanitation, coping with water scarcity, and water and disaster. This year’s theme is water and health.
