Temperature records in jeopardy

The next four days could be marked by falling temperature records. The warmest March 16th on record at the regional airport was 14.3 degrees back in 1995 and our forecast high today is 14. According to Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips, we’ll likely set a new record today and it’s possible those records could continue to fall for the rest of the week. The warmest St. Patrick’s Day on record was 16.5 degrees and Phillips believes our forecast high of 16 tomorrow will threaten that. Thursday and Friday records are about 12 and 13 degrees, repsectively, and Phillips’ forecast suggests those temperatures are not safe either as we look ahead to the start of spring on Saturday afternoon at 1:32 PM.
570 News weather specialist John Wilson says these modern records are one thing but if we look back almost 70 years we’ll find something akin to a heat wave. In the mid-1940s, says Wilson, we had temperatures at this time of year in the range of 19 to 21 degrees from Windsor to Toronto. But he says those statistics were registered before official records were kept.
