New merger motion set for Monday

Waterloo City Council takes another stab at the thorny issue of potential merger talks with Kitchener Monday night.
Two previous motions were defeated, but a new one is on the agenda Monday, and councillor Mark Whaley would not be surprised to see it pass.
He tells 570 News the debate has captured the imagination of the community and triggered discussion throughout the city.
The latest motion up for a vote – tabled by Mayor Brenda Halloran – asks the question “Do you support the members of Kitchener and Waterloo Councils engaging in discussions about the advantages and disadvantages of merging in the Cities of Kitchener and Waterloo? Yes or No.”
If passed, it would need provincial approval to land on the ballot, which Whaley expects would happen, since Kitchener is already on board.
The debate is expected to be lively, with several delegations scheduled to address council.
