Should the Region of Waterloo continue to fluoridate your municipal water?”
That’s the draft of a question for the next municipal election ballot, as agreed upon by Regional Council’s Administration and Finance Committee today.
That question now goes to a public meeting March 9th, and back to Council in April for final approval for the Fall ballot.
Regional Clerk, Kris Fletcher, says the question is designed to be a simple yes or no question with no ambiguity.
Fletcher adds, the question will only be put on ballots where fluoridation occurs: the City of Waterloo; portions of Woolwich, mainly St. Jacob’s and Elmira; a small part of Kitchener around Kiwanis Park; and possibly a small area around the Wilmot-Waterloo border, where staff are checking to see if fluoridating happens.
Councillor Tom Galloway says the concise nature of the question is key, adding ballot questions are sometimes so ambiguous yes means no, and no means yes.
Galloway raised concerns in the meeting to make sure the public would be adequately informed of the March 9 meeting.
