Rallies were staged across the nation Saturday, including one in Waterloo, opposing the Harper government’s prorogation of Parliament until March.
Event organizer, Brandon Bedford tells 570 News, he hopes the government listens. He says the end goal is to let the government know that the Canadian people care about democracy and what goes on in Parliament.
Another organizer, Katie Preiss, says she didn’t expect the huge turnout the event got. She says about 500 people showed up while she was expecting about 300.
Meanwhile, at a demonstration on Parliament Hill, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff said the protest was a good sign for Canadian democracy.
Addressing the same crowd, NDP leader Jack Layton said people need their government to work on their behalf, and to push for climate change legislation and positive economic policies.
The “No Proroguing” protests were launched by grassroots groups, which banded together on Facebook.
