Living wage proposal rejected

Anti-poverty advocates are disappointed, after Waterloo Regional Council killed a living wage proposal Wednesday night.
Last week, a committee voted to hold off on a decision until the new council is elected in the fall, and with last night’s decision, if a living wage policy is to adopted, it will have to be the next council that spearheads it.
The living wage, estimated at $13.62 an hour without benefits, would have applied to regional staff and contractors hired by the region.
Cheryl Ives of Opportunities Waterloo Region, tells the Record she is “disappointed” but “not surprised.”
Still, she says her group will continue to work to educate residents on the benefits of a living wage.
