Kitchener woman arrested in Guelph Torch Relay incident

A group protesting the Olympic torch run is disputing the story surrounding an incident in Guelph yesterday, when the relay passed through the city.

A 28-year-old Milton woman, who was carrying the torch, was knocked down and 19-year-old Brittney Simpson of Kitchener was arrested. However, members of the the Olympics Resistance Network claim the route was changed without notice, and an RCMP runner actually ran into the protesters, not the other way around. They maintain their goal is to draw attention to the social and economic impacts of the Olympics, and not to break the law. They say there was miscommunication about the route and they also accuse the police of overreacting. The Milton woman who fell – Cortney Hansen – was treated at the scene.
