Winter officially begins today

The official start of winter happens at 12:47 p.m. today and the region is bracing for some winter-like-weather, just in time for holiday travel.

Winter Solstice is where the point where the sun pauses as far south as it can go in the transit over our sky.

For us the sun is at the lowest angle of the year and today has the least amount of daylight.

The Earth however is actually 3 million miles closer to the sun than it is during the summer, but the reason for the colder temperatures at this time of the year is because the Earth is tilted away from the sun resulting in less energy hitting the northern surface
