‘Zellers diner’ food trucks to be briefly part of local brand re-launch

A Canadian staple is coming back to Cambridge; along with the re-opening of Zellers, the Canadian superstore is bringing back its dining experience but in a new way.

For the first few days during the store's grand opening at The Cambridge Centre, Zellers will be offering a nostalgic trip back in time to when the store served up hot food and family fun.

The dining experience might not be what Canadians are used to, because their limited space inside of Hudson’s Bay won’t allow them to build a sit down restaurant. They have worked around this lack of real estate and will be offering their timeless classics in food truck form.

“Zellers is mobilizing a fleet of food trucks to greet customers at its first locations opening this spring,” said Zellers. “Set to appear over a series of days, the Zellers Diner on wheels will pull into various locations and serve shoppers with some fan favourites from the fondly remembered Zellers Family Restaurant,” the company said in a news release.

The store is now looking to the community to determine what food items will grace the menu of the re-invented family restaurant. People can vote through the company's Instagram poll for the next week to help decide the items.

There are a number of options available including: the Big Z Burger, fries and gravy, hot chicken sandwich, quesadillas and a few other classic items.

If the trucks are a success at the grand openings, Zellers plans to roll them out across the country to various cities and events. Dates and locations will be determined at a later date.

The Zellers at the Cambridge Centre is set to open this spring and will be the only location in Waterloo Region.
